Meet Melia Dunn and her mom Syd

Meet Melia Dunn and her mom Syd.

Location: AZ

In her words: “On March 18th, just as stay-at-home orders were taking shape, Mom and I said goodbye to Ryan – Son/Brother – after a long journey with brain cancer. As you might imagine, the pandemic grief mixed with the grief of his loss is a surreal and shifting cocktail of emotion. Still processing and releasing the weight that years of care giving accumulated… there is a bizarre sense of global grace. As though the entire world has taken a moment to pause, reflect and re-imagine what could be as we face a world that’s a little less bright.

Every story of loss is unique and personal. And yet, experiencing loss is universal and inescapable. As Mom and I are using the threads of peace, love and grace to mend our broken hearts. The slower pace of pandemic life is a gift. It’s allowing us time to take stock, to recommit to ourselves. We are reminded that nothing is promised, and to live and love with intention. My mom loves to quote, “to thine own self be true.” It’s easy to get swept up in life’s busyness and lose our truths. During this unprecedented historic moment, we are grateful for the opportunity to reset the compass of our souls.

We will miss Ryan for the rest of our loving days. We accept that our lives are forever a dance where the partners are grief and peace – shifting often between who gets to lead. Looking back, we are in awe of Ryan’s unbreakable spirit. Right now, we cherish the strength of our mother-daughter bond which faced its share of tests. Looking ahead, we trust there is beauty and love and joy yet to experience. And we intend to feel every single bit of it!”
